Sermon Take Away: “Let This Cup Pass from Me”

Matthew 26:36-42

One of the most soul-stirring prayers was Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. His humanity is fully expressed in this prayer. The Garden was his place for valuable time to commune with his Father in heaven. Before him was a death that no man in earth’s history will experience. He was going to be crucified for the sins of the world. The Father had given him a cup of sorrow and death, so that we may have joy and life.

What is so important about this prayer is that Christ responded just as any man would when his life is about to be taken. In this prayer, he asked “if it possible, let this cup pass from me”. Was there another remedy or way to save man from sins? There was no other remedy. Then he concluded, “not as I will, but as thou wilt”. Because he loved his Father he could open up to him his feelings, but at the end request for his will to be done. Jesus knew that the Father knows best.

Jesus was all God and all flesh. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…” He was totally dedicated to the righteousness of God and he lived as other men did, but without sin. His life of teaching, ministry, prayer, and suffering are prime examples for us in our faith living. In this prayer, while wanting to be obedient, the flesh was pulling. He knew to do the will of the Father and yet he asked for another way for man. He went through the spirit and flesh struggles that we experience in our faith living. The desire to please God and to satisfy the flesh.

In this prayer, Christ reminds us that we are human, but we have some heavenly help. In the most difficult time, there is nothing to hard for us when we trust in God’s will. Jesus’ prayer was heard and angels came to strengthen him. Just as God came through for Christ in his Gethsemane moment, he will come through for us in our Gethsemane moment.
