Scripture: John 19:26 & 27; Proverbs 31:26

God has given us the gift of a precious life. It is in our lives, we accept the love of Christ. It is in our lives we appreciate all the bountiful blessings that he gives. It is in our lives that we express gratitude for the women in our lives, especially our mothers.

This is the month that many send out special acknowledgments to mothers and to the women in their lives. The mother has always been a very important person to the family. While on the cross, Christ could see the needs of the people. His concern and compassion for people was simply amazing. Even in his own suffering, he continued to reach out to his people. He said to his mother, “Woman, behold the son!” He said to his disciple John, “Behold thy mother!”. He was commanded to take care of his mother.

This passage of scripture is so significant to family relationships. Mary and John were not related biologically. It is the love of God in Christ that connects people into families. The family is to love and support each other. The family is to share in the knowledge and faith of God and Christ. “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

The love of a mother is priceless. It is through her that love will continue in generations. The mother has a central role in the family. She is to nurture, teach, instruct and to advise. Fervently, she prays for her children and family. “She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”

The enemy of the cross of Christ has divided and destroyed so many families, just as he did in the Garden of Eden. But thanks be to God, who made a way to save humanity from total destruction. The hope for every family remains in Jesus Christ alone.

On that very dreadful day in the history of this world, Jesus had enough strength to let his followers know to love and serve one another. It was at Calvary, that the love of the family was proclaimed with the bond of Mary and John, mother and son. Pray for the unity of families in Christ Jesus.
